Plumcot - Prunus salicina x Prunus armeniaca
Plumcot - Prunus salicina x Prunus armeniaca
Common name: Plumcot
Botanical name: Prunus salicina x Prunus armeniaca
Description: The Plumcot (Prunus salicina x Prunus armeniaca) is a hybrid fruit tree
resulting from the crossbreeding of plums (Prunus salicina) and apricots (Prunus armeniaca). This deciduous tree typically grows to a height of 2.5 to 3m, with a spread of about 2.5 to 3m. It features a rounded canopy with dense, attractive foliage.
Leaves: The leaves of the Plumcot are dark red/burgundy when first flushing but change to a bright green color and a smooth, glossy surface as they mature. They measure approximately 5 to 12 centimeters in length and have finely serrated edges.
Flowers: In late winter to early spring, the Plumcot tree produces a profusion of fragrant, white to pale pink flowers. These blossoms are not only beautiful but also essential for pollination, leading to fruit development.
Fruits: The fruits of the Plumcot are a unique blend of plum and apricot characteristics. They are medium-sized, with smooth, velvety skin that can range in color from yellow to reddish-purple. The flesh is juicy, sweet, and aromatic, combining the flavors of both parent fruits, making them perfect for fresh eating, baking, and preserves.
Growth Habit: The Plumcot has a spreading growth habit with a rounded canopy. It benefits from regular pruning to maintain its shape and improve air circulation, which promotes healthy fruit production.
